While volunteering with Casa Materna and PCI Guatemala, one of the primary concerns was combating early malnutrition. Breastfeeding is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to improve infant nutrition, and breastmilk provides the vitamins and antibodies that babies need to fight infections and develop healthily.
For World Breastfeeding Week, Casa Materna partnered with the local hospital to present information on the importance of breastfeeding for the health and development of babies (and mothers). Though the traditional communities in the rural areas of Guatemala have high rates of breastfeeding and public breastfeeding is widely accepted, the urban area of the city of Huehuetenango is increasingly being confronted with issues such as formula marketing and difficulty of breastfeeding when going back to work, which can decrease breastfeeding rates.
